Chemical Oxygen Demand Reagent Tubes

This CAI Method SB1500 determines COD by oxidation of waste water sample with potassium dichomate followed by measurement of the decrease in the amount of the oxidant present (for the low range determination), or by the measurement of the increase of the amount of reduction of product formed (for the high range determination). Both of these chromium species are colored and are measured using a spectrophotometer. The CAI Method SB1500 may be used in place of other NPDES-approved spectrophotmetric methods for the determination of COD.

2mL of a water or wate water sample are added to a 16mm glass culture tube containing the digestion reagent and a catalyst. The tube is capped with a polypropylene, Teflon lined cap and heated in a block digester at 150C for 2 hours. The orange Hexavalent chromium is reduced to a greenish trivalent chromium. The analytical range for the spectrophotometric method is 5-150ppm (measured at 420nm).
